The SFU Teaching and Learning Centre invites experienced teaching assistants and tutor-markers to apply to lead workshops at the 27th Annual Fall Semester TA/TM Day: The Teaching Orientation Program on Friday, September 7, 2012, at SFU Burnaby. This orientation day is intended for new and veteran TAs and TMs (and grad students interested in becoming TAs or TMs).

WORKSHOP LEADERS' RESPONSIBILITIES
• Workshop preparation (workshops will run 75 minutes with up to 30 people per session)
• Attendance at a planning meeting prior to TA/TM Day (in early June, 2012)
• Leadership of the workshop on Friday, September 7, 2012
POSSIBLE WORKSHOP TOPICS
Note: This is merely a list of possible topics. Applicants may propose other titles, including discipline-specific and advanced topics.
• Improving students' writing skills
• Reflective practice in teaching
• Facilitating effective discussions
• Helping students in distress
• Integrating technology into your teaching
• Active learning in labs and tutorials
• Creating an inclusive classroom
• Academic integrity/honesty
• Surviving your first tutorial
• Voice and presentation skills
• Evaluating student performance
• Setting the right tone in your classes
• Helping students think critically and work cooperatively
• The role of the TA, TM, and ITA
• Diversity in the classroom
SALARY
• TAs and TMs selected to lead workshops will be paid the current GTA2 hourly rate.
SUBMISSION REVIEW AND SELECTION
Submissions will be reviewed by the TA/TM Day program committee. Criteria by which submissions will be assessed are available below to guide the development of your proposal. The TA/TM Day organizers may approach applicants to request changes to their proposals to better fit TA/TM Day needs.

• Clarity and coherence of submission
• Relevance to TA/TM Day
• Relevance and usefulness to the intended audience
• Presentation approach and level of participant engagement in the session
